Star Trek: The Experience flies for the last time.

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

In December 1996, I received one of the most exciting phone calls of my career as a designer. On the line was Ray Smith CEO of SBD Inc. Months before that call, Ray made me aware of the possibility of participating in the design of a 27-passengers flight simulation ride conceived as the core of a project titled Star Trek: The Experience. Over time we talked about how to approach it, about the 3D Design Technology (much different back then) and the communication and coordination of the project among my studio and his organization — and patiently waited. But this call was different: Paramount Pictures had signed on the dotted line and we were ready to move on with the project. The rest is history. It is needless to describe the crazy deadlines, the amount of drawings, the complex computer generated 3D data, the renderings, the long nights and the overall insanity that a project like this commands. It was all worth it in the end, and I will always remember the sense of pride and accomplishment I felt when the Experience finally opened in January 1998.

But everything good must come to an end, and “Star Trek: The Experience” is ending its 11-year run at the Las Vegas Hilton on Sept. 1. Since 1998, millions of guests have boldly gone into the 24th century to battle Klingons, Borg and other hostile aliens.

Still today I see Star Trek: The Experience as my first big break. This project was the baptism by fire and crystallized my design career for good. I am honored of having been part of this project and having contributed to the entertainment and enjoyment of so many people. Star Trek: The Experience will always have a special place in my memories.
